Teens: This Week Take Time to Really Taste Your Meal

Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.

—Eckhart Tolle

Have you ever found yourself eating while studying at your desk and reaching for yet another bite only to find you’ve already scarfed everything down? If so, you’re not alone. It’s more common than you may think.

Yet, the simple act of paying attention to what you are eating delivers big rewards.

In one study with healthy young adults, researchers found that those who ate a meal slowly (26 minutes) reported more enjoyment and satisfaction compared to those who ate a meal more quickly (6 minutes). Plus, the slow eaters were less inclined to want to snack a few hours later.

All good reasons to slow down and savor the flavor at every meal.

How to embrace slow eating

At your next meal, slow down and really taste what you’re eating. Is your dish savory? Sweet? Salty? Really taste it and notice how you feel.

Don’t forget to take in all the aromas, too. After all, your sense of smell plays a large role in your ability to enjoy food. (Remember how bland your food tasted the last time you had a stuffy nose?)

Make a deal with yourself. Every day this week, take time to slow down and really taste your food. It’s a delicious way to be a better you.
