Teens: Be a Friend Who Inspires

Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.

—Mother Teresa

Did you know that your text messages have the power to inspire a friend on their journey to a healthier lifestyle? In one study involving real teens, researchers uncovered exactly what kinds of text messages can lift a friend up and spark real change, and what just plain misses the mark. Read on to learn the words that make a difference, and practical ways you can help a friend feel valued, confident, and supported.

Text practical tips. Think lunch ideas, success stories about other teens, and positive tips tailored to your friend’s individual challenges.

Text encouraging messages. Think virtual cheerleader, and don’t skimp on emoticons and exclamation points. After all, progress toward any healthy goal is nothing short of “Spectacular 😊💖 !!!”

Don’t text about unhealthy foods or behaviors to avoid. Seriously. You may think telling a friend to eat an apple instead of ice cream is helpful, but it’s more likely to trigger thoughts of, well, eating ice cream. In other words, send positive, practical tips. And, don’t be shy about congratulating progress along the way.

Text messages that inspire others

Here’s how you can text positive and practical messages that are sure to inspire a friend to make healthy choices:

1. Share meal or recipe ideas. Text a specific tip for a healthy option or substitution. For example, freeze grapes for a refreshing snack, steam carrots with rosemary for a savory flavor boost, or add a lemon slice to sparkling water for a refreshing drink.

2. Share a helpful strategy that worked for another teen. For example, “Exercise was boring until I started walking at the mall with my friend. It’s more fun to walk and window shop.”

3. Share tailored messages. Share a tip that targets their individual challenges. For example, if a friend is having trouble eating enough veggies and fruits, sharing a tip about how you eat one of your favorites may help.

A friend is a gift. Uplift and encourage, and who knows, your presence and ideas may be just the present your friend is looking for.
